Here are the Facts:
- 1. The Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) has recently ruled that royalty rates that webcasters pay to play music will grow from 300% up to 1200%.
- 2. These royalty rates are much higher than the rates which satellite radio companies pay.
- 3. These royalty payments (retroactive to 2006) are due July 15th. Many webcasters will be unable to pay them and go bankrupt. Non-commercial stations like KPFA and KFCF will face much higher costs.
This is what you can do:
- 1. Contact your Congressional representatives, preferably by phone. Sample letters and more information are available at: kpfa.org/savewebradio.
- 2. Let your local media know that this is not a fringe issue: There are 50 to 70 million web radio listeners in the US, and this decision will substantially decrease Internet radio diversity.
- 3. A Bill (HR 2060, the "Internet Radio Equality Act") has been introduced in the House to nullify these outrageous royalty fees: Read about it here.
