Web Radio Crisis Update: 6 Weeks Left to Act!

    Listen:
KPFA's Eric Klein has filed a story on the possible extinction of web radio. Listen now:

    Read:
Davey D, a host on KPFA's Hard Knock Radio and Friday Night Vibe, covered the issue in his Mercury News column. Read it online.
The U.S. Copyright Royalty Board has ruled that on July 15th, commercial music webcasters and many non-commercial webcasters must pay excessive royalties on streamed music, retroactive to 2006. Many online stations will go bankrupt immediately and will shut down.

The immediate impact to KPFA will be increased royalty costs and a huge increase in administrative labor and costs. The long term impact could be that instead of growing our online audience, KPFA may be forced to place a limit on the amount of online listeners we have!

    What actions can listeners take?

KPFA listeners Ric (in Oakley) and Susan (in Berkeley) both used our online feedback form to ask for advice on who they should contact to make their voice heard on this issue. Contacting Congressional Representatives seems to be working. For example, several of Dianne Feinstein's recent responses to the issue are posted here. Since there is so little time left before the ruling takes effect, the best way to contact legislators is to call them (use this page to find Congressional phone numbers.)
