In concert with our sister station KFCF, KPFA broadcast the 10th Annual Homelessness Marathon, which aired the voices of those without permanent shelter.
KPFA celebrated Women's History Month with an array of excellent music, arts, news and public affairs programming. On March 8th, we also aired the Pacifica National Women's Day special, a collaboration of programmers from around the network. Many thanks go to the programmers - women and men - who have brought us stellar Women's History Month programming. These include Adalia Moncada, Richard Wolinsky, Nicte Ordonez, Lisa Dettmer, Amelia Gonzalez, Max Pringle, Karyn Sanders, Nina Serrano, Sally Phillips, Caroline Casey, Stephen Kent, Maya Orozco, Gina Hotta, as well as KPFA's daily public affairs programmers.
In March we produced a wide range of programming commemorating the fourth anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq, including many public affairs programs, music programs and arts programs. KPFA aired two live broadcasts of rallies against the war, one hosted by Davey D of Hard Knock Radio and Malihe Razazan of Voices of the Middle East and North Africa, and produced by Trinh Lee and the Apprenticeship Program and the other was hosted by C.S. Soong of Against the Grain and produced by Aaron Glantz.
April 15th marked KPFA's 58th anniversary. We celebrated this milestone throughout the month. It was a time for us to look back at what we have achieved, remind our listeners of our mission, and look towards the future. On the 58th anniversary of KPFA Radio and the Pacifica Network, Larry Bensky spoke with one of the founders, Richard Moore.

KPFA celebrated Cesar Chavez' birthday by playing a documentary series about the history of farmworkers in California called "Pastures of Plenty". In the month of April we ran a weekly series of programs of highlights from the San Francisco International Film Festival drawing on incredible archival tape, much of it recorded by Eric Bauersfeld. KPFA's recordings include interviews with Bernardo Bertolucci, Akira Kurosawa, Jeanne Moreau, Francois Truffaut, and many others.
We aired a two hour special on gun violence, in response to the shooting at Virginia Tech, produced by Esther Manilla and hosted by Larry Bensky.
Organizers called Step it Up 2007 the largest day of action on global warming in the history of the United States. Brian Edwards-Tiekert and Sandra Lupien brought listeners live coverage of the action in the streets and the situation in the halls of power.
KPFA broadcast the testimony of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, which had a record number of online listeners. It was hosted by Larry Bensky and produced by Esther Manilla and Trinh Le.
Larry Bensky's final Sunday Salon program aired Sunday, April 29th. There was a public event for him on June 3rd, where he was interviewed by Pacifica historian Matthew Lasar. All of us owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Larry for his incredible contributions to alternative media in this country.
KPFA honored Workers' Memorial Day with a program of reports about work injuries by members of our intensive news training program.
On May Day, KPFA devoted the day to programming about issues relating to labor and immigrant rights, including the Haymarket Massacre, the struggles of undocumented workers, and much more. Miguel Guerrero and Miguel Molina co-anchored a two-hour special KPFA broadcast from the Unconditional Amnesty for Undocumented Workers rally at San Francisco's Civic Center, at the same time the ILWU shut down the West Coast ports in solidarity with immigrant workers.
KPFA did special programming on the final appeal court date for political prisoner Mumia Abu Jamal.
KPFA launched a campaign against the recent decision by the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB). Internet broadcasters, including noncommercial stations like KPFA, were facing a dramatic increase in the royalties they must pay to the recording industry for the songs that stream on their websites - an increase of up to 1200 percent for small broadcasters. KPFA embarked on a campaign to educate and mobilize our listeners around this decision.

Bob Dylan 66th Birthday Salute: Larry Kelp and Derk Richardson joined forces once again to celebrate Bob Dylan's 66th birthday.
On June 9th KPFA commemorated the 40th Anniversary of the Israeli invasion of Palestine with special programming, headed up by Nora Barrows-Friedman.
Throughout the month of June, KPFA honored the struggles of the LGBTQ community with Gay Pride programming.
KPFA aired a daily Pacifica broadcast from the US Social Forum in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as reports from the forum by Nora Barrows-Friedman and Davey D. The forum brings together activists from around the US to meet, strategize, and talk about what a better world might look like. [Listen]
Music from La Casa de la Trova: Bonnie Bone, filling in for Eddy Pay, presents traditional Cuban son, bolero, and descarga with commentary by Luisa Blanco and Ruben Neyra of La Casa de la Trova in Santiago de Cuba, birthplace of la trova cubana.
KPFA aired highlights and analysis of the House Judiciary Committee hearing on President Bush's decision to commute the sentence of former White House aide Lewis Scooter Libby, anchored by Davey D and Dennis Bernstein.
On July 13th, KPFA participated in a day of web radio silence as part of a national protest against threatened increase in the royalties rates that web broadcasters must pay to the recording industry for the songs that stream on their websites.
On Music of the World, Joanna Manqueros (sitting in for Stephen Kent), interviewed John Santos, percussionist, ethnomusicologist and Latin Jazz legend John Santos regarding his 2007 release Papa Mambo.
KPFA has launched a series of on-air monthly town halls on the issues of our times. The first town hall focused on the issue of violence in the wake of the tragic Chauncey Bailey killing, hosted by the Friday Night Vibe's T-Kash and produced by Anita Johnson.
KPFA also did a special two-hour broadcast from the Iraq Veterans for Peace Convention in St Louis, Missouri. Aaron Glantz was at the convention and talked to veterans about the Iraq occupation and resistance by GIs.
Starting during the Bonnie Simmons Show and rolling right into the Derk Richardson show, an interview and live performance with Noe Venable.
KPFA sent Hard Knock Radio's Davey D and Weyland Southon to New Orleans to report on the International Tribunal on Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The audio that they sent back, and which was aired on the KPFA Morning and Evening News, the Morning Show, Hard Knock Radio, and other programs - was incredibly compelling and horrifying. The testimonials of New Orleanians laid bare what really happened to that city's poor people and people of color when the levees broke.
KPFA launched its innovative multimedia project The War Comes Home. The War Comes Home, (warcomeshome.org) features the first person accounts of US veterans returned from Iraq and Afghanistan, and looks at the true costs of the US occupation for those in America.
KPFA broadcast from the 6th annual Power to the Peaceful event in Golden Gate Park, hosted, produced and engineered by a team consisting of Anita Johnson, Weyland Southon, Amelia Gonzalez, Andrea Lewis, Victoria Z, Esther Manilla, T-KASH, Greg Bridges, Mickey Mayzes, Frank Sterling, Oscar Hernandez, Chris Brown, Diana Martinez, Elena Garcia, Bonnie Bone, Michael Yoshida, and Jim Bennett.
KPFA produced Pacifica's national coverage of General Petreaus testimony to the House of Representatives about the "success" of the troop build up in Iraq. The broadcast was hosted by Mitch Jeserich and produced by Esther Manilla, with technical production by Eric Klein. KPFA brought to the air the voices of the protesters who continuously disrupted the hearings and were arrested and brutalized by the police.
Walter Turner and Greg Bridges did a three hour Africa Today special honoring the life and legacy of educator and historian Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, who died in Cairo on August 17th. [Listen]: Part 1 & Part 2.
KPFA hired prominent anti-war activist, journalist, Conscientious Objector and Green, Aimee Allison for co-host of the Morning Show with Philip Maldari. She replaced Andrea Lewis who was awarded a Knight Fellowship.
KPFA hired Mitch Jeserich as the permanent executive producer of the Morning Show. Jeserich is an accomplished radio journalist, producer and anchor, who until recently was the News Editor for Wakeup Call, the morning show of Pacifica station WBAI in New York.
KPFA did a great deal of strong ongoing programming, including Hard Knock Radio's coverage of the Jena 6 demonstration live from Jena, Louisiana, where Davey D was on site, Terra Verde's coverage of the oil refinery boom, and Against the Grain's program on the role of mass produced goods in US empire.
Education Today's Kitty Kelly Epstein and Kevin Cartwright produced a two hour KPFA virtual town hall on education, as part of KPFA's monthly series of town halls. They addressed the effects of the Bush Administration's No Child Left Behind on America's children and took calls from educators, parents and the public at large. Part 1 & Part 2.
KPFA broadcast from the Answer anti-war demonstration on October 27, hosted by Malihe Razazan of Voices of the Middle East and North Africa and Dennis Bernstein of Flashpoints.
Musical Colors commemorated the anniversary of the death of Ernesto Che Guevara.
KPFA sent a team to Seattle to broadcast for Pacifica the final FCC hearing on media ownership, in collaboration with Pacifica affiliate station KBCS. Dissident FCC Commissioner Adelstein said, when he heard that KPFA and Pacifica would be broadcasting the hearings, "no one else but you comes to cover these". The broadcast was put together by Larry Bensky, back on the air following his retirement from his regular program on KPFA, Brian Edwards-Tiekert, Esther Manilla, Mickey Mayzes, Michael Yoshida, and Jon Almeleh.
SF Bay Oil Spill: KPFA, particularly the KPFA News Department and the Morning Show, did in-depth, extensive coverage of the Cosco Busan oil spill into the San Francisco Bay.
The station produced a special broadcast from a state hearing into the response to the spill, convened by state Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, which was hosted by Karolo Aparicio of Terra Verde and Sandra Lupien, formerly of the KPFA News. KPFA also broadcast a special on-air town hall on the oil spill, hosted by Mitch Jeserich and produced by Rainjita Geesler.
